The Economic Cooperation Organization’s Cultural Institute (ECI) has welcomed Turkmenistan’s announcement of preparations for Turkmen Carpet Day 2025, set to take place on Sunday, May 25, 2025. This annual celebration, held on the last Sunday of May, pays tribute to the country’s time-honored tradition of carpet weaving and its deep cultural roots.

First established as a national holiday in 1992, Turkmen Carpet Day celebrates the creativity, mastery, and enduring legacy of Turkmen artisans. In 2019, the “Traditional art of carpet weaving in Turkmenistan” was recognized by UNESCO and added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—affirming its global cultural importance.
The 2025 program is expected to include traditional carpet exhibitions, scholarly discussions on weaving history, and tributes to master weavers. These activities are designed to raise awareness, foster pride, and ensure that this living heritage continues to be passed down through generations.

In recognition of the strong cultural ties between Turkmenistan and Iran—both with rich traditions in carpet weaving—ECI has expressed its continued support for initiatives that promote regional cooperation and cultural exchange.
Furthermore, ECI is exploring the possibility of organizing a special cultural festival to honor Turkmenistan’s intangible cultural heritage, introducing key national celebrations such as Horse Day, Carpet Day, and Melon Day to a broader regional and international audience. The festival would serve as a platform to showcase Turkmenistan’s unique cultural expressions and strengthen mutual understanding among ECO member states.
Turkmen Carpet Day 2025 promises not only to highlight exceptional craftsmanship but also to reinforce bonds of friendship and shared heritage across the ECO region.
